NOx Reduction for Seagoing Vessels
The International Maritime Organization introduce IMO Tier III in 2016, whichdecrease NOx levels considerably in new ship builds and those operating in ECAs (Emission Control Areas) or NECAs (Emission Control Areas related to nitrogen oxides).
Yara is a leading design and build expert for Maritime sectors needing to reduce their NOx emissions. We specialize in providing SCR technology, processes and NOx reduction products for you to achieve your legal requirements.
Inland Barges
Inland shipping along the Mississippi river system represents a large part of the transport of goods in the USA. There are also other rivers and canals in the East and West of the country that are used for such transport, as well as on the Great Lakes. In addition, some ferries transport passengers along the coastline or on the Great Lakes.
This industry is working towards even cleaner, faster and more efficient barges, tugs, river tankers or ferries. This means a reduction of NOx emissions (nitrogen oxides) emitted from the combustion chamber of their diesel engines.
Yara is a key supplier of technology and urea based reagent for secondary NOx emission control. We can deliver solutions that will help the inland shipping sector in the USA meet its NOx emissions requirements. Our offer for inland shipping NOx emissions control includes:
The SCR technology
Yara has equipped many maritime vessels with SCR catalyst systems. Should you have questions regarding an SCR system for inland shipping, please contact our expert.
The urea based reagent
The urea based reagent, marketed under the name NoxCare 40 to bunker stations along the main rivers and lake shores. This is a 40% urea solution, distinct from Diesel Exhaust Fluid as inland shipping doesn’t require the same purity of product as trucks and cars do. However, it is important to choose the right quality of urea reagent for the good performance of the SCR system.
What is NOx Reduction and SCR
Ahead of the NOx control legislation for inland shipping, some barges, tugs and river tankers are already being equipped with SCR technology and use urea solution based reagent in their daily operations. The SCR system for inland shipping as in other NOx control applications is quite sensitive and, therefore, it is very important to use the right quality of reagent. Yara has the experience of both SCR shipping systems and of delivering NOx reagents based on urea to NOx control applications for maritime applications
What are NOx emissions?
NOx are Nitrogen oxides (NOx) which are a major global issue causing serious problems to both the environment and human health. NOx emissions destroy the ozone in the stratosphere, create ground level ozone and smog. As a consequence, NOx is considered to be one of the main causes of health problems such as asthma, respiratory diseases and reduced lung function, as well aggravating existing heart diseases. Today, 1 in 12 Americans suffer from asthma according to the American Academy for Asthma, Allergy and Immunology.

Urea Solution for NOx Reduction
Reliable Urea solution reagent deliveries to bunker stations for inland shipping
For your urea solution based reagent for the marine segment, you can count on reliable deliveries from Yara. We are one of the world’s largest producer of urea. Our plant in Belle Plaine, SK, supplies the US market with urea. As the US remains today an import market for urea, we rely also on our network of 30 Yara plants in the world. This urea is brought to our US customers through our network of terminals.

NOx Reduction Solutions for Bunkering Stations
Bunker service stations can easily start with Yara’s NOxCare40 reagent for their SCR equipped clients.
When a bunker station gets started, Yara can organize reliable supply by drums or Intermediate Bulk Containers (IBC’s). The reagent can be bunkered directly from the drum or the IBC. You will choose the packaging that corresponds to your needs.
As the volume of business from your bunker station increases, we recommend you consider larger bulk storage options so that your clients can replenish their urea reagent tanks. You will replenish the urea based solution at the same time as the bunkers are refilled.

Tier 4 Legislation
In the United States, marine diesel engines used on inland waterways must meet increasingly stringent emissions requirements. Marine diesel engines are used in a wide variety of inland vessels ranging in size and application from recreational pontoon boats to dry bulk cargo barges.
NOx reduction for inland shipping: legislation to be implemented
For their NOx emissions, inland shipping comes under the legislation for non-road (or off-road) diesel engines. The EPA has signed the Tier 4 emissions standard in 2004 requiring emissions of NOx to be further reduced. Such emission reduction are achieved through the use of secondary NOx control technology – SCR or Selective Catalytic Reduction technology with a urea based reagent, a similar technology to the one used for heavy duty vehicles, utilities and other off road engines.
The engine-based Tier 3 standards are implemented since 2009 and until 2014. The after-treatment based Tier 4 standards for commercial marine engines at or above 600 kW will be implemented over the period 2014-2017. So we will gradually see inland shipping requiring to use the same technology.
