Start Supporting Next Year's Crop Development at Post-Harvest

Newsletter, July 30, 2020

Potential tree nut yields in 2020 are strong. USDA NASS has projected a record 3 billion pound almond crop, pistachios are mostly in an “on” year, and in many areas the walnut crop is also looking heavy. Higher yields correlate to higher nutrient demands. As a grower or an advisor, this is the time to ask yourself if your nutrient management strategies have kept pace with this increased demand. If not, post-harvest is the time to address any shortcomings from the current year and minimize inherent alternate bearing tendencies following a large crop.

Specific nutrients that will support the developing 2021 crop in the post-harvest window include nitrogen, potassium, calcium, magnesium, zinc, and boron. These elements, when in adequate supply, will support photosynthesis, carbohydrate production and storage, root growth, and proper bud development. Additionally, these nutrients will support optimal flowering success and nut set the following year before the trees have the capacity to take up nutrition from soil or foliar applied practices. Now is the time to review 2020 crop nutrition performance, outline 2021 goals, and make necessary corrections.

Post-harvest nutrition should be tailored to the needs of each individual field. However, we’ve created some basic programs that are tailored to critical nutritional support for a productive return bloom and nut set in the coming year.
